MIJUNG JUNG
I am Jung Mijung, an artist who creates
two-dimensional works based in painting (hoehwa).
My work closely reflects my personal interests, inner thoughts, emotions, and tendencies. While the themes fundamentally revolve around time and memory, I strive to express these concepts visually in diverse ways, seeking variety in my imagery.
Memory accumulates elements like viewpoints and concepts over time, and I believe it serves as a self-identity, distinct from others, representing the artist's personal history. While continuously evolving, memory commemorates one's identity by consistently linking to a unique narrative. In my work, time and memory expand by connecting and assigning meaning to both my everyday and special experiences.
The repetition of actions transforms one’s existing self without conscious awareness. Through the flow of time and repeated actions, one becomes self-aware and forms a relationship with self-identity.
I have expressed the passage of time, the resulting changes, accumulation, separation, and connection - these personal stories of mine - by projecting them onto specific geometric shapes.
It forms an expanded image by continuously extending from a point into a triangle through a repetitive process of connection. Time and memory do not disappear or break off; rather, they constantly create links. This act of joining pieces continuously influences the work, revealing and expressing itself through imagery.
The continuity of time and consciousness defines my existence as an individual.
The basic unit of the triangle starts from a single point (the natural ‘me’) and extends to two points (the ‘me’ that differs from the natural ‘me’). Ultimately, all of these points are connected as ‘me’. The triangle is a shape that fundamentally begins as a ‘singular’ unit but undergoes self-division (splitting and expanding). Through this repetition of similarity, the structure of the triangular pattern expands. Although it starts from the specific shape of a triangle and gradually expands through repeated connections, it transforms into an unintended, irregular form.
The overall image extends beyond the basic form of the triangle, starting from a single point and reaching out to the right and left. It evolves beyond the initial shape of the triangle, aiming towards something unintended, ‘designing’ along the way. Through the repetition of division and association, it creates something new. By repeatedly starting from a single point and expanding into a triangle, it continues to shape the entire image.
Being within the triangle means both transcending oneself and remaining connected. The triplicity that starts with the triangle always encompasses an end, a middle and a new beginning. Thus, the triangle illustrates its existence within a dynamic tension among its three sides.
The dynamism of the triangle allows for irregularity while maintaining balance without losing the interconnection between its sides. This way, the triangle forms connections
from a particular perspective. The structure of the repeating triangular pattern expands through the repetition of similarity. Starting from the basic triangle shape and gradually expanding through successive connections, eventually transforming into an unintended, irregular form.
The overall image starts from a single point and repetitively accumulates the basics of the expanding triangle, revealing itself in a form that I did not intend. It is an unplanned design that extends beyond the shape of the triangle. Through repeated expansion and connection, it evolves into something new. Beyond the initial ‘connection’, the triangle creates a new kind of ‘extension.’
