Artist Qlee’s work is based on ceramics, incorporating elements of thread to explore the visual and tactile qualities of each material. This fusion of distinct mediums evokes curiosity and creates a harmonious multi-sensory experience.
The Ceramic Foundation:
In the first phase, clay—a cold, hard, yet highly adaptable material—takes on purposeful forms, shaped in anticipation of its eventual connection with thread. This initial ceramic work is crafted with excitement, setting the stage for the interaction of these elements.
The Thread Connection:
In the second phase, soft, warm, and flexible thread is woven, establishing a new presence within the piece through knitting. The repetitive, meditative nature of this process draws one into a state of relaxation.
Though clay and thread differ greatly in character, their fusion involves a series of trials and adjustments, resulting in a new and intriguing sensory experience.
Lately, my appreciation for the depth of handcrafted work, the patience it requires, and the atmosphere of real landscapes has grown stronger. Last winter on a chilly day, I watched snowflakes fall softly from the sky, settling on the ground. This serene scene of snow, connecting the sky and earth, stayed with me and inspired me to capture it in my artwork.
Ceramics shaped from clay are connected with thread as soft as snow, creating a single scene that evokes the feeling of ‘the sound of snow’ spreading outward.
In this work, I arranged the elements to gather multisensory aspects, focusing on a single theme: ‘snow’.
The wall pieces are shaped to resemble snowflakes, with each one showing different flowers inside as if they are blooming. I created ceramics of various sizes, drilling holes for threading, and setting up the base of each piece. Then, using different glazes, I created colors that are similar yet slightly unique.
On the finished ceramics, I carefully wove thread, stitch by stitch, to shape each snowflake. Together, these snowflakes, alike but subtly different, capture the beauty of falling snow.
The Sobok series captures the moment when snow falls gently from the sky, accumulating on the ground, trees, rooftops, and everything in the world, expressed with a sense of being almost touchable. The pattern of the thread, both regular and irregular, builds up on the ceramics, evoking the image of snow settling.
In this exhibition, I hope you can imagine the sound of snow and feel the serene sensation that nature provides.
