Choi Gorae
The works of artist Choi Gorae derive from senses rather than words.
She specifically focuses on visual and touch. Colors articulate the first while texture of fabric fulfills the latter.
For Choi, “colors” are used as a medium to convey intangible and abstract features like emotions, memories,
and atmosphere. The array of pigments tell a tale of the artist for the viewers.
Among the different materials she uses, the most commonly seen is yarn – an item she believes is the foundation of expression. Like how drawings expand from dots, lines to surfaces and beyond, for Choi, yarn functions as the bedrock that embodies an infinite potential.
She adopts a language of her own to convey her surroundings and emotions.

TWO WOMEN
In her work “Two Women,” Choi Gorae talks about how humans are ultimately designed to be in
“codependent relationships, whether they love or hate the differences.”
An ongoing work from 2020, “Two Women” is a reinterpreted version of Choi’s observation of delicate yet dynamic relationships between two female individuals.
The way she portrays the connection and emotions changes annually, serving as an experiment to both herself and the viewers to touch upon different senses.
This year in 2022, the artist exhibits the work via hand tufting – a technique of pushing yarn strands through
a piece of fabric. The two women depicted by finely padded strands of yarn on a roughly hanging fabric almost seem as though they would candidly come out of the artwork.
